Michael Potter is a Tasman-based ceramicist who produces sculptural work in clay. Much of his work focuses on the utilitarian object which he depicts with crafted realism. He has had previous careers as a photojournalist and as an assistant winemaker.
Michael gained a Diploma in Ceramic Arts from the Dunedin School of Art, Otago Polytechnic. Michael has received awards and acclaim for his work, including being awarded the 'Best in Show' for outstanding graduates in applied arts and design at Objectspace, a finalist in the Portage Ceramic Award in 2015 and the WaiClay awards. He also received the top award at Waiheke Community Gallery for sculpture.
He has since been thriving as a full-time Ceramicist, producing a wide range of functional pottery pieces as well as exploring and experimenting with varying clays, glazes and techniques in order to create exquisite artistic pieces. Potter creates beautifully formed individual cameras as well as installations with many cameras clustered together. These pieces are technically challenging to produce and are elegantly finished with classic muted glazes.
